As we have already known, PHPMaker has the ability to generate the List page which is including the Search Panel in order to search the certain records based on the certain keyword(s). However, not many people know that the web applications that generated by PHPMaker has a powerfull Quick Search feature.
If you generate your List page that includes the Quick Search, then you will see there are three options which are represented by three radio button controls in the Search Panel. They are: Exact phrase, All words, and Any word.
The questions are:
- Did you know what is the difference among those three options?
- Have you tried it and distinguish the powerful of those three options?
To answer those questions, I will explain you in more detail by giving some usage examples. You will know what is the differences between one and another from their result pages. So I hope you will be able to tell your web application users how to optimize this Quick Search by using those three options.

Exact phrase
As the default, by using this option, you will be able to search the records that contain the keyword that match with the exact phrase you enter in the search textbox, either exact as the partial keyword or exact as the whole keyword in the certain field(s). Since this is the simplest method and often being used for search method, PHPMaker uses it as the default option.
For example, please follow this steps:
1. Visit this page: http://kodepos.posindonesia.co.id/kodeposalamatindonesialist.php?language=en
2. Choose Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta from Province directive.
3. Make sure the Exact phrase has been chosen.
4. Enter the keyword: sudirman in the search textbox.
5. Press Search (*) button.
6. You will see the result page will return you the records which contain that exact phrase of keyword, either partial or the whole keyword in the certain field. By using this option, you will get the records that contain all words in the certain field. This option is useful if you want to narrow the search result must be contain all words that you entered in the search textbox. Each keyword must be separated by space character.

2. Choose Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta from Province directive.
3. Make sure the All words has been chosen.
4. Enter the keyword: jendral sudirman in the search textbox.
5. Press Search (*) button.
6. You will see the result page will return you only the records which contain that keyword, either partial or the whole keyword in the certain field. From the result in the second option above, you will see that the result page will return you only five records that contain jendral and sudirman keywords in the certain fields, regardless the order of the keywords. As you can see, we enter jendral sudirman in the search textbox, but we get the result which contain Sudirman, Jendral in the certain field.
8. You can compare this result in the second option with the result if you are choosing the first option above.
9. Please note that if you are using the same keyword in this option for the first option (Exact phrase) above, then you will get no result. -
Any word
By using this option, you will get the resulst wider, since you should enter as many keywords as you want, regardless whether the keywords are located in the same record or the separated records. Each keyword must be separated by space character. This option is useful if you want to display the records that contain any word you enter in the search textbox. Especially, you want to display as many records based on the many keywords from you.

2. Choose Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta from Province directive.
3. Make sure the Any word has been chosen.
4. Enter the keyword: sudirman subroto in the search textbox.

"Any word" option is useful if you obviously want to search for some records based on the multiple search keywords.
In Conclusion
As you can see from the three example above, now you have known the different result between the first, second, and third option of Quick Search. PHPMaker has provided the options so that you can optimize it based on your various needs.
